High-resolution long-slit echelle spectrograms have been obtained in eight position angles centered on the nucleus of the nearby Sc spiral galaxy M51. These observations reveal disturbances in the ionized gas which extend several hundred parsecs in the northern and southern quadrants around the nucleus. The disturbed gas is characterized by "nuclear" emission properties: the intensity of [N II] emission exceeds that of Hα, and line velocity widths are 100 - 1000 km s-1 as compared with less than 50 km s-1 in the quiescent galactic disk. Radial velocity patterns suggest that the circumnuclear disturbances take place in the plane of the disk. Properties of the M51 nuclear region are discussed in terms of low-level Seyfert-like activity.
