The central region of the barred spiral galaxy NGC 1097 is exceptional in terms of morphology and luminosity. The morphology is dominated by a ring (torus) like structure with a diameter of 1 kpc seen at radio wavelengths, 10 μm and in the Hα line. In the plane of the galaxy this structure suggests elliptical orbits for the gas. The major axis of this ellipse is perpendicular to the major axis of the bar. The luminosity of the central region is high at all wavelengths (the bolometric luminosity is ≡1044erg/s) when compared to "average" central regions. At 10 μm the central region belongs to the strongest emitters among spiral galaxies. Both the morphology and luminosity suggest a burst of star formation which might be (partly) driven by the bar. The star formation rate is ≡5 M_sun;/yr.
