Numerical solutions are given for the transfer equations for an inhomogeneous, optically thick synchrotron source. The solutions are discussed in the context of compact, extragalactic radio sources. The impact of inhomogeneity upon circular polarization is examined and analytical expressions to estimate the effects of inhomogeneities are presented. It is suggested that transfer effects are important to the emergent degree of circular polarization, that the magnetic field has a large-scale structure, and that the electron distribution is peaked around the energy corresponding to the self-absorption turnover. The peaked electron distribution is produced directly by the acceleration process.
