Circular polarization observations at 8.0 and 4.8 GHz for compact extragalactic radio sources conflict with the magnetic dipole model for the sources. Asymmetries in the sources indicated by very long baseline interferometry, together with the low degree of circular polarization, suggest that the magnetic dipole model is not adequate to describe the radio sources. Only if radiation from the extragalactic sources were generated by both positrons and electrons could the circular polarization data and the magnetic dipole model be reconciled.
