The current phase of declining activity of the solar cycle allows us to perform both a reliable examination and an accurate comparison among the various classes of solar activity prediction methods proposed in the literature. In particular, we focus great attention on the evaluation of the cycle shape, i.e. both the amplitude and phase features during the whole cycle as determined by sunspot numbers.
