We propose to obtain high-precision measurements of the chromospheric helium D3 line in a sample of about 60 mid--late A stars. In previous studies, a few stars in this temperature range show moderately strong activity but most do not. However, no study has been undertaken with uniformly high precision measurements in a large number of stars, and such a study is most practical with ground-based observations. These measurements will record weak levels of activity previously undetected, and will thus provide excellent statistics on activity in these stars. With this data we hope to understand why there is a large range in activity levels in stars with similar temperatures, and determine whether this activity is powered by magnetism or acoustic waves.
