The HEGRA Collaboration is running a complex multi-detector experiment on La Palma at the ORM for studying cosmic rays in the energy range 5x1011-1016 eV. Two of the detectors, namely the array of 6 imaging Cherenkov telescopes and the wide-angle integrating AIROBICC measure in Cherenkov light the extensive air showers produced by cosmic particles. The exceptionally good sky conditions on La Palma were very decisive in constructing HEGRA there.
