The observed amount of coronal heating is presently explained in terms of the energy supplied by surface waves; attention is given to a calculation of the Landau damping together with transit time magnetic pumping, or Cerenkov damping, of waves with an arbitrary wave vector k. Emphasis is placed on the role in Cerenkov damping of low frequency surface waves. Transit time magnetic pumping is the only collisionless damping mechanism for surface waves; in some situations, surface waves can deposit energy and momentum in the corona by way of transit-time magnetic pumping as efficiently as kinetic Alfven waves do with Landau damping.
