A bright sodium D-line headglow was observed when a rocket released sodium vapor at night from 150- to 125-km altitude on its downward trajectory. Thermal excitation of the sodium D line is ruled out, and it is argued that the emission was caused by a chemiluminous reaction between Na2 dimers and atomic oxygen. The possible relationship to the natural sodium nightglow is discussed.
