The characteristics of gas-phase processes in the interstellar medium are briefly considered, and an investigation is conducted of interpretation problems concerning the diffuse interstellar bands, taking into account the report provided by Herbig (1975). Attention is given to a suggestion made by Dulay (1979) that the diffuse interstellar bands are transitions of transition metal ions in oxidic lattices perturbed by lattice defects. On the basis of an evaluation of the observational data, it is suggested that the specific defects responsible for the intensity are the polysulfide ions S2(-) and S3(-). The optical strength of the transition metal is obtained from resonantly matched transitions in either of the polysulfide ions. It is noted that both S2(-) and S3(-) are spin doublets. Thus, any coupling with the transition metal systems can break down the spin selection rule in addition to parity selection rules.
