Two doublets detected during a spectral survey of the carbon-rich object IRC + 10216 are tentatively identified as arising from C3H, which detailed chemical calculations indicate can be efficiently formed by ion-molecule reactions in an outflow whose abundance agrees with that derived from the observations. Circumstellar ion chemistry is noted to be driven by the photodissociation of carbon-containing parent species (such as CO, C2H2, and HCN) to C(+). It is suggested that C3N and HC3N are formed by neutral-neutral reactions at higher densities and temperatures than are presently considered.
