A method is proposed for calculating the mean chemical composition of lunar surface features from their albedo and color index. The relationship between optical zoning of the moon and zoning with respect to chemical properties is examined. Some difficulties involved in remote determination of the chemical composition of zones with albedos in excess of 0.18 and of zones with a very high color index are noted.
