The results of mass spectrometric determinations of the concentrations of 13 major and minor elements in 19 of the Yamato meteorites are presented and the meteorites are classified on the basis of their compositions. Samples weighing from 0.3 to 1 g obtained from meteorite interiors were sparked in the ion source of a double-focusing mass spectrograph to analyze for the elements Na, Mg, Al, Si, S, K, Ca, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co and Ni, and V concentration was evaluated photographically. On the basis of these determinations and of concurrent analyses of the chondrites Allan Hills 7603, Mt. Baldr (b) and Holbrook and the achondrites Johnstown, Pasamonte and Stannern, the Yamato meteorites 74002 and 74144 are classified as type L chondrites, 74001, 74103, 74155 and 74156 as type H chondrites, and 74662 as a carbonaceous chondrite. Of the achondrites, Yamato 74010, 74011, 74016, 74037, 74097, 74125 and 74136 are diogenites, 7408(l) is a howardite and 74450 is a eucrite. These classifications are found to agree with available previous classifications based on petrology and mineralogy and to confirm the earlier classification of Yamato 74123 as a ureilite. Finally, it is pointed out that some of the Yamato diogenites exhibit a very high chromium content, which is found to be positively correlated with vanadium in the achondrites investigated.
