The evaluation of mineral analyses requires for meaningful conclusions that the analyses be complete and accurate, that foreign mineral phases be known, and that all assumptions necessary to the calculations be valid. In the case of apatite these requirements have seldom been met, and it is possible that erroneous conclusions have been drawn as a result. Published analytical data is inadequate to determine with certainty the degree of solid solution or of non-stoichiometry which may exist in natural apatite. Analytical techniques which are capable of yielding accurate results with most natural phosphate rocks and minerals are described in detail, and an exhaustive analysis of an apatite is presented. The composition of this sample is discussed with respect to purity and stoichiometry.
