We obtained high resolution Echelle spectroscopy of a sample of Hipparcos subgiant stars (1.5 < M(Hp) < 4; 10pc < d < 80pc) to measure their detailed chemical abundances. The initial goal of this study is to measure metallicities of the subsample of Hipparcos stars where the location of the star in the color-magnitude diagram can uniquely give a stellar age if the metallicity is known, which is the case for subgiants. Our results represent the first stage of a project to combine the technique of modelling color-magnitude diagrams with that of modelling chemical evolution based on elemental abundances to provide a self-consistent picture of star formation in the solar neighborhood.
