Earth Atmosphere: Optical Depths

The absolute brightness indicatrices for the clear atmosphere in the visible region of spectrum are computed using the spherical harmonics technique. The effects of three aerosol fractions (the Aitken cores, submicron and hard-dispersed particles) on the brightness of the sky are studied. Some limitations of the technique used for checking the stability of the earth atmosphere optical properties are detected. The approximation relations are derived and presented for the determination of the aerosol optical depth at any time moment from the observations of the brightness indicatrices.
