Electron and ion distributions and electric field measurements obtained by the S3-3 satellite are discussed as they relate to the auroral acceleration process. Complete data, in the form of energy-time spectrograms for ac electric fields, electrons, ions and energetic protons, are presented for the auroral crossing of July 29, 1976, which occurred near dusk on a very disturbed magnetic day. The potential drop determined by integrating the measured electric field perpendicular to the magnetic field is found to be similar to the potential difference inferred from the particle distributions for a series of encounters with dc electric field reversals associated with ion beams and accelerated electron distributions. The analysis also indicates the possibility of electric fields parallel to the magnetic field extending above and below the satellite altitude of 7500 km when strong electrostatic field reversals are encountered. Particle signatures are also observed which imply a source of strong acceleration above and relatively close to the satellite coinciding with auroral hiss and ion conics, and a broad inverted V structure near the polar cap boundary giving rise to large variations in the inferred potential below the satellite.
