We present the first spectrally resolved images of an astronomical object acquired with a charge-coupled device (CCD) imaging X-Ray spectrometer. These data were collected during approximately 230 seconds of observing time; yet they provide us with powerful analytic tools leading to results that improve our understanding of the target object (Puppis A). Based on these data, we are able to eliminate from consideration several important models for this remnant. We conclude that the plasma in Puppis A is inconsistent with any single temperature equilibrium or nonequilibrium ionization model. Further, we conclude that the remnant is inconsistent with predictions based on the Sedov model for middle-aged supernova remnants. Variations in the spectrum of the remnant on scales ranging from 5:0 to 30:0 indicate density and temperature variations on the same scale. No uniform density model for the interstellar medium can reproduce the observations. However, the observed spectral variations are smaller than those predicted by standard models of a cloudy interstellar medium, indicating that the interstellar medium in the region of Puppis A is more homogeneous than predicted. We propose a model for the interstellar medium having a pre-shock density of about 1 cm^{-3}, with 30-50% variations in this value on all scales down to 1.6(d/2.2 kpc) pc. We are unable to demonstrate the presence of any abundance enhancements or gradients in the plasma. However, we present marginal data indicating the presence of a region of enhanced neon abundance, demonstrated by increased emission in the band dominated by emission from Ne IX and Ne X lines. This single, short observation has enabled us to expand our understanding of the Puppis A supernova remnant, as well as the surrounding interstellar medium. It serves as a demonstration of the power of CCD imaging X-ray spectroscopy.
