The cosmic acceleration has opened up exciting fundamental questions that have energized the theory community. Phenomenologically interesting ideas have been put forward which expose the field to significant observational tests. Here we briefly review the theoretical situation and discuss how to design and analyze the SNAP experiment in order to have maximal impact on the open theoretical questions. We use our methods to quantify the specific opportunities offered by the SNAP experiment. The combination of deep unanswered questions and opportunities for significant observational advances make the study of cosmic acceleration perhaps the most exciting field of contemporary physics.
