Careful examination of the optical/UV spectra of quasars reveals a large diversity of emission line properties. We present a detailed analysis of the Hβ emission line in a large sample (N=450+) of quasars within redshift z=0.7. The sample is extracted from SDSS (Data Release 5). We characterize the profile of the Balmer Hβ line in terms of width, asymmetry, centroid shifts at various fractional intensities and kurtosis. The results emphasize that: 1) quasars do not distribute randomly about an average spectrum and 2) there exist two populations of quasars. Their spectral diversity probably indicates a fundamental change in the structure and kinematics of their broad line-emitting region at some critical value of the Eddington ratio (Lbol/LEdd = 0.2 ± 0.1).
