In October, 2008 an asteroid (2008 TC3) entered the Earth's atmosphere over Sudan and 47 fragments were collected. This material represents a rare opportunity to study an F class asteroid, a subclass of C class asteroids, which are believed to be similar in composition to carbonaceous chondrites, one of the most primitive types of extraterrestrial objects. We applied two-step laser desorption laser ionization mass spectrometry (L2MS) to seven samples, and we found polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) ranging in mass from 100 to 400 amu. Phenanthrene (178 amu), pyrene (202 amu) and a mystery peak (338 amu) were most prevalent. The L2MS technique was applied to analyze bulk PAH content in crushed samples and to the map abundances of specific PAHs across an unmodified sample surface. Only small differences in PAH compositions were detected between samples.
