The efficiency of using the coded aperture on the ‘Gamma-1’ telescope to solve a variety of astrophysical problems has been considered. The coded aperture technique is shown to be at a disadvantage in relation to the conventional one so far as discriminating a source from the background is concerned. However, for powerful sources the coded aperture technique has an advantage from the viewpoint of accuracy of source location on the celestial sphere, the resolution of closely spaced sources and the determination of the sizes of sources.
