Direct magnetic-field measurements are compared with T89 models for the stable convection period of 24 Nov. 1981. In the day sector, besides erosion of the daytime magnetopause in the magnetosphere, a strong depression of the Bz component (about 30 nTl) occurred, as a consequence of which the polar cusp in the Northern Hemisphere sank to the geeomagnetic latitude of 70 deg. In the nighttime magnetosphere at 6.6 earth radii, the magnetic configuration was characterized by a developed current sheet, and differed greatly from the model configuration.
