Geomagnetic data from a chain of observation stations in the Antarctic located around 100 deg longitude at invariant latitudes of 77 to 90 deg are analyzed together with data on the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) taken from King (1977) to study the relation between the mean magnitudes of the three components of the IMF and the components of the geomagnetic field at the surface of the southern polar cap. A regression analysis was carried out on observations for the equinox months of March, April, and May, 1975. Results indicate that during the equinox period the closing currents from the western electrojet extend up to the daytime sector of the southern polar cap.
