In March 1976, during a period of high geophysical activity, the Prognoz-4 satellite recorded unusually intense fluxes of energetic electrons over a considerable distance in the transition region. The Prognoz-4 differential spectrometer measured electron fluxes at energies of 0.3-3.0 MeV and proton fluxes at energies above 0.5 MeV. Intense bursts of the energetic electrons were also observed in the upper high-latitude magnetosphere. The mechanism for the formation of the observed electron layer is connected with frictional acceleration occurring in the solar-wind flow past the magnetosphere.
