The observed asymmetry (with respect to midday) of diurnal variations of He(+) and N(+) ion concentrations in the upper ionosphere indicates that longitudinal drifts in the lower ionosphere determine the diurnal-variation parameters of these ions. Another consequence of this asymmetry is the nonunique dependence of the ion concentration on solar zenith angle.
