Scientific paper
Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are large scale transient phenomena. CMEs carry mass and enhanced magnetic field as they propagate from the low solar corona into the heliosphere. The STEREO Heliospheric Imagers (HI) provide, for the first time, direct observations of CME propagation. In this study, we analyze HI images to construct elongation-time stack plots (j-maps) using time sequences of HI images and test a number of velocity functional forms and propagation directions to obtain meaningful height-time plots. We characterize CME parameters such as speed, expansion, etc. Our events are selected from a time period in 2008, when the Sun and the heliosphere are under relatively quiet conditions during solar activity minimum. Our aim is to further understand the interplanetary propagation characteristics of these CMEs.
