A correlation analysis of space receiver scintillation data for a 250-MHz signal transmitted from a geosynchronous satellite to an equatorial station is used to determine the average drift of equatorial F-region irregularities transverse to the signal path. Also, the characteristic velocity, a measure of temporal variability of the irregularities, is calculated. A steep decline in the characteristic velocity is observed, following the onset of scintillation during the premidnight period. The characteristic velocity gradually increases in the postmidnight period, with a minimum around 0100 LT. Also, it is found that the pattern of the characteristic velocity on a magnetically disturbed night is sometimes substantially different from that of a quiet period.
