Two superheterodyne receivers operating at two harmonic frequencies (38 and 76 MHz) and a swept frequency spectrograph were used to study characteristic pairs of Type III bursts (also referred to as f h pairs, because they exhibit a fundamental and a harmonic structure). The two components observed at the same frequency are clearly distinguished in the duration/decay constant plane. The peak intensities of the two quasi-simultaneous components observed at harmonic frequencies are less correlated than the peak intensities of the two components observed at the same frequency. The peak intensities observed at the harmonic frequencies are compared with a theoretical model based on the h - f hypothesis, showing that a radiation model with strong amplification and exponentially growing f-radiation requires particular assumptions for the source structure to be consistent with the present observations.
