We study the classical dynamics of homogeneous and isotropic cosmological models, with a scalar field conformally coupled to the metric, from the point of view of their possibly chaotic behavior. In previous work on such models, the emphasis was mainly on numerical simulations. Here, we develop further the analytical aspects, and show in detail how homoclinic chaos arises, using a perturbative method; we then estimate the width of the stochastic layer in phase space and the time scale for the manifestation of chaos.
