Simultaneous observations at auroral and subauroral observatories near a geomagnetic meridian are compared in an effort to localize VLF-chorus emission zones at the earth surface. Signals with mean frequencies of 2 and 4 kHz were recorded at the Lovozero and Sogra stations during February-March 1974. It is found that the channeling of VLF waves on the plasmapause during low magnetic activity is a necessary condition of the escape of waves from the equatorial plane to the earth surface. However, this channeling is an insufficient condition for this escape, since even a large density gradient on the plasmapause may not suffice for wave channeling toward the earth surface during electron density increases at the base level and decreases of wave frequency.
