The last ten years or so have seen many changes in how astronomy (and other) libraries operate, especially with the increased use of electronic resources. There is less use of the physical library, but does it still serve a purpose in an observatory?
Because of such changes, users presumably have different perceptions of the library, and this paper uses the results of two surveys separated by a period of several years to attempt to identify such perceptions.
In addition, the Anglo-Australian Observatory library has changed the focus of its collection somewhat, in the direction of instrument design and construction, and this may have changed the habits of a number of its users -- while there are numerous astronomy resources on-line, this may not be the case for these other areas.
