Conditions leading to a change in the number of the connected components of physical space are discussed along with astrophysical implications of such a change. It is shown that separation of small regions is prevented by a strong potential barrier and that loss of connectedness probably occurs near curvature singularities and inside black holes. Neutron stars are close to separation from the surrounding space, which is consistent with the observation that in the case of stability loss, neutron configurations are subject to gravitational collapse.
