Contact Binaries: Orbital Periods, Contact Binaries: Triple Systems

Scientific paper

All the published moments of light minima of the near-contact binary BF Vir have been compiled and the changes of orbital period have been analyzed. It is shown that the period of the system may be oscillating with a period of 30 years while it undergoes a secular period decrease. The physical mechanisms of modulation of orbital period changes are investigated. The existence of a third body with mass 0.281 Msun and orbital radius 10.2 AU may be used to interpret the period component of the orbital period. The secular period decrease may be caused by the mass and angular momentum losses of the system. BF Vir is a short-period (P = 0.6405761 days) near-contact binary.
