Magnetic field data from Interball-Tail, IMP-8, and Geotail during five different isolated substorms were analyzed to investigate variations in the tail lobe magnetic field. Four of the events are very similar to each other and to events previously cited in the literature. These four events are associated with a disruption of the cross-tail current that begins near the earth and expands tailward at a high velocity during substorm epansion. The unique event out of the five seems to show a different variation in the magnetic perturbations caused by the disruption of the cross-tail currents. In this paper we will discuss a possible model that explains this difference.
