Changes in the plasma sheet in the central part of the magnetotail at a distance of 37 earth radii as observed by the TMP-8 satellite are analyzed with high time resolution; two successive substorms on March 3, 1976 are examined. It is shown that the pattern of disturbance at the commencement of the explosive substorm phase corresponds to a sharp increase in reconnection at distances of 10-20 earth radii. In the vicinity of the neutral X-type line, intense plasma fluxes are generated which travel away from the source preferentially along the magnetic field. Some of the particles are accelerated to energies exceeding thermal energy by several orders of magnitude, and a magnetic island (a plasmoid) arises and moves away from the earth.
