IMP-8 data on two substorms observed in the midnight sector of the magnetosphere on March 3, 1976 are discussed. It is shown that magnetic pressure in the far magnetotail near the plasma sheet continues to increase after the commencement of a substorm. This appears to signify that the local increase in neutral-sheet current in the far magnetosphere continues even after the substorm commencement. The subsequent current disruption in this region appears to be associated with the attainment of a critical current density.
