We present the first results of a 50-ks Chandra imaging observation centered on the position of Sgr A*, the compact nonthermal radio source that is believed to be powered by matter accreting onto a 2.6 million solar-mass black hole at the center of the Milky Way Galaxy. We discuss the results of the search for an X-ray counterpart to the Sgr A* radio source. We also discuss the spatial distribution and physical properties of diffuse emission and numerous unidentified sources detected in the field of view. This research was supported by NASA grant NAS 8-38252.
