We present the first-ever Chandra HETGS observations of the neutron star X-ray binary LMC X-4. With 150 ks out of eclipse, spread over three days, we probe the transition from the low state to the high state in the 30d superorbital period. At all times, we observe a prominent Fe I K-alpha line. We detect a number of emission lines, for which the He-like triplet line ratios indicate that the emitting matter is photoionized rather than collisional. We also find possible signatures of hot winds which vary with superorbital phase, suggesting that we may have directly observed the material occulting the neutron star.
