We have obtained Chandra ACIS-S imaging and spectroscopic data for the cluster of galaxies Abell 2029. This nearby (z=0.0767) cluster has been identified as a high mass-deposition rate (M-dot > 100 Solar masses per year) cooling flow, with a corresponding central cusp in X-ray surface brightness. However, this cluster does not have optical emission lines characteristic of cool gas, nor blue stellar colors indicative of star formation due to the cooling gas. Furthermore, the central cD galaxy is a radio galaxy with extended radio morphology that is highly unusual for a cD in a cooling flow cluster. We observed A2029 to determine if the central X-ray excess was in fact due to cool gas, or another mechanism, such as hot shocks, or a point source associated with the radio galaxy. We present a temperature map of A2029, and we specifically explore the nature of the central region, including the excess of X-ray luminosity over an expected surface brightness distribution and the spectral components present in the core.
