ChaMPlane is a continuing campaign started in year 2000 to survey the
point X-ray sources discovered by the Chandra X-ray Observatory in the
galactic plane in order to constrain the X-ray binary population in
the Galaxy. The optical survey is designed to cover the Chandra ACIS
field using the Mosaic cameras (36'x36') mounted on the CTIO and KPNO
4m telescopes. So far this survey has yielded 66 ChaMPlane fields
which cover about 23 square degrees and 222 ACIS observations in the
galactic plane during the Chandra Cycles 1-8. Over 15000 point X-ray
sources have been detected within the survey fields. Their
counterparts are searched in the deep optical photometry in V, I, R
and H-alpha bands. For the fields in the galactic bulge region, IR
photometry in the J, H and K bands are also taken. For identified
optical counterparts more than 6000 spectra have been taken for
classification. From all these data, we are building a ChaMPlane
legacy database. All the Mosaic images (stacked and individual) will
be available to the public via NOAO Survey Archive. All the ChaMPlane
photometry data, X-ray data and their optical counterparts, as well as
their optical spectra, will be available to the public at the
ChaMPlane website (http://hea-www.harvard.edu/ChaMPlane/). This
ChaMPlane legacy database will provide rich resources for astronomy in
the 21st Century.
