D. R. Bates, of the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical
Physics, Queen's University, Belfast, argues that it would be
unjustified to devote resources to the interstellar communication
problem on the assumption that there is a neighbouring technological
civilisation which continuously operates a beacon signal suited to us.
