A geometrical-optics approach is used to model the propagation of decameter waves in the equatorial ionosphere in the presence of a large-scale irregularity formed by statifications of the F-region and a developed equatorial anomaly. Two types of ray trajectories are identified: (1) those trapped in a wave channel formed by the irregularity along the geomagnetic equator at large initial elevation angles of the transmitter radiation pattern and (2) those with a trapezoidal form in simulations of the vertical sounding of the ionosphere from the ground. It is concluded that the results obtained are suitable for investigating the exploitation of unconventional communication channels in the ionosphere.
