Indications that the chemical composition of primary cosmic rays at energies from 10 to the 14th power to 10 to the 15th power eV consists of heavier particles than in the energy domain 10 to the 12th power eV are examined. From analysis of high energy hadrons, in extensive air showers, the pure proton composition of the primary cosmic radiation can be excluded. The comparison of various components shows that the average atomic weight of the primary particles is about 10 to 15.
