We present new Period-Luminosity relations of Cepheids located in the "maser galaxy" NGC 4258 in the V, I and H bands based on new observations carried out with Gemini North and the Hubble Space Telescope.
NGC 4258 is a key galaxy in the Extragalactic Distance Scale thanks to its very precise distance estimate, which is based on VLBI observations of masers located in the accretion disk that surrounds its central massive black hole. It is anticipated that the distance to NGC 4258 will be determined with a total uncertainty of 3% in the near future.
Given this unprecedented accuracy, we wish to establish equally reliable Cepheid P-L relations in the V, I and H bands that can serve as a new first rung for the Extragalactic Distance Scale. In particular, the SHOES collaboration plans to use these P-L relations to obtain precise distances to host galaxies of type Ia SNe and determine the Hubble constant with a total uncertainty of 5% or less. This will provide important constraints on the equation of state of dark energy.
