The paper is concerned with the non-self-similar problem of the central explosion of an equilibrium inhomogeneous gas sphere in its own gravitational field. The problem, which is relevant to the study of stellar phenomena and particularly supernova explosions, is solved by the asymptotic method of a thin shock layer. It is shown that, with a sufficiently high explosion energy, after the shock wave has reached the surface of the sphere, the initially inhomogeneous self-gravitating gas sphere (star) will expand into the void (interstellar medium) completely, without any central gravitational residue left.
