The many new observations of Cen A and the models which have been proposed to explain the observations are reviewed. Observations of the morphological components of the galaxy, including the nucleus, the jet, the disk, the elliptical component, the globular cluster system, and the extended radio source, are examined in detail. Evidence for the merger hypothesis of Cen A is presented along with arguments against other explanations. It is shown that the galaxy is a member of two somewhat divergent populations of galaxies: dusty ellipticals and giant radio galaxies. Proposed mechanisms for the infall of gas fuelling the galaxy's activity are summarized.
