We propose to obtain BVR lightcurves for two Centaurs observable from KPNO during this semester (1999a): 1997 CU_26 and Pholus. These observations are essential for our plan to determine lightcurves for the complete set of all eight known Centaurs, and to make physical studies of these emissaries from the Kuiper belt. Our ultimate goals are to understand the physical nature of these small bodies, their interrelationships with each other, and how they are connected to Kuiper belt objects, Trojans, main belt asteroids, and comets. Our primary objective for this proposal is to obtain lightcurve color variation information, which will help us to disentangle variations due to shape and due to reflectance differences, and will give us insight into the properties of Centaur surfaces. A companion proposal is being sent to CTIO to make observations of the southern hemisphere Centaurs.
