We describe a class of stochastic cellular automaton models for the occurence of the solar flares. "Flaring elements" of a deliberately unspecified nature are supposed to interact. A 1-D version of the model, capable of analytical description, conflicts in detail with the observations but indicates the quantitative success of such a picture. Minimal a priori assumptions are involved. The qualitative importance of such a model lies in the arbitrary means of communication between flaring elements.
