A field of size 20 times20 arcmin^2 centered approximately 12 arcmin west of the center of 47 Tuc was monitored for a total of 8 hours in a search for faint short period variables. Light curves of 36269 stars with V<20.0 were analyzed. We identified 2 certain contact binaries, 7 background RR Lyr variables from the Small Magellanic Cloud, and one short period variable of undetermined type. One out of 2 contact systems is a likely member of the cluster, the other is probably a foreground variable. We show that for the surveyed 47 Tuc field a relative frequency of contact binaries is by an order of magnitude lower than analogical frequencies for M71, M5 and NGC4372. UBV photometry extending down to the cluster main sequence stars with M_V approx 6 was derived for 8604 objects. This sample contains four blue stars with U-B<-0.40. Two of them are candidates for cluster's hot subdwarfs.
